2011 Grand Lecturer's Convention

The 2011 Grand Lecturer's Convention will take place on Saturday March 19, 2011 hosted by Old Town Lodge No. 908 located at 40 Main Street in Southampton.

The events will begin at 2pm with the District Deputy Grand Master officially convening the Suffolk District convention and welcoming the Grand Lecturer. The work that will be exemplified is the Entered Apprentice Degree and lodge closing.

At about 4pm, there will be a brief ritual competition to determine the Suffolk District MAGLA ritual competition representative. The work for the competition is to be announced and all those brothers who have not attained the rank of Worshipful (or Right Worshipful/Very Worshipful) are encouraged to participate. The work for the competition will be announced towards the end of August.

At about 5pm, all those in attendance will share in a great meal prepared by Brothers of Old Town Lodge.

Potts Award

The prestigious Potts Award is given to lodges where the following seven officers are present at the Grand Lecturer's Convention:

Worshipful Master
Senior Warden
Junior Warden
Senior Deacon
Junior Deacon
Senior Master of Ceremony
Junior Master of Ceremony

Any number of lodges can be awarded the Potts Award. Recent recipients from the Suffolk District include:

2010: The Lodge of Antiquity No. 11
2009: Smithtown Lodge No. 1127 & Old Town Lodge No. 908

District Attendance Trophy

The Suffolk District has a tradition of awarding a trophy to the lodge that has the highest number of Brothers in attendance at the Grand Lecturer's Convention. The winning lodge has the right to display the trophy in their lodge for the ensuing year. Recent recipients include:

2010: Smithtown Lodge No. 1127 and The Lodge of Antiquity No. 11 (tie)
2009: Smithtown Lodge No. 1127
2008: Suffolk Lodge No. 60
2007: Suffolk Lodge No. 60

Attendance for both attendance awards takes place after the convention and before the MAGLA competition.

MAGLA Ritual Competition

At the conclusion of the Grand Lecturer's Convention, the Suffolk District holds a ritual competition to determine the district's representative in the Metropolitan Assistant Grand Lecturer's Association (MAGLA) ritual competition in New York City. This contest is open to all Master Masons who have NOT attained the rank of 'Worshipful.'

The work for the 2011 MAGLA competition is the Master's work at the altar after the obligation in the Entered Apprentice Degree. This work is from page 44: “Br AB, on bnd bt t l in My" to page 47 "with the everlasting assurance of a blessed immortality" The competition to select the Suffolk District representative to the Metropolitan Assistant Grand Lecturer's Association ritual contest will take place after the Suffolk District Grand Lecturer's Convention on March 19, 2011 which will be hosted by Old Town Lodge No. 908 in Southampton. All Brothers from lodges in the Suffolk District who have not attained the rank of Worshipful who have not won a previous MAGLA competition are eligible to compete for the honor of representing the District. The 2011 MAGLA competition will take place at a date to be firmly announced in the fall but is tentatively set as Tuesday March 31, 2011.
